As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, a significant increase in travel is set to take place, with forecasts indicating that a record-breaking 79.9 million Americans will embark on journeys of at least 50 miles from their homes. This estimate marks a rise of 1.7 million travelers compared to the previous year. The American Automobile Association (AAA) has expanded the definition of the holiday travel period this year, now including the Tuesday before Thanksgiving through to the following Monday. This modification is likely contributing to the rising numbers as more individuals plan to venture out earlier and return later.
Driving Dominates Holiday Travel
The majority of travelers, approximately 71.7 million, are expected to hit the roads this Thanksgiving season, signifying an increase of about 1.3 million people compared to last year. Fortunately for drivers, fuel prices are providing a silver lining, with current averages poised to remain below $3 per gallon, offering relief compared to last year’s average of $3.26. As road travel continues to reign as the preferred mode of transportation for Americans, it highlights the importance of car travel in holiday traditions and gatherings.
In the air travel sector, around 5.84 million travelers are anticipated to take to the skies, reflecting a rise from last year’s 5.73 million. However, with this increase in air travel comes elevated costs; flight prices are predicted to rise an average of 3% compared to last Thanksgiving. Interestingly, while domestic flight bookings remain relatively stable, international flight bookings have surged by 23%. This indicates a growing trend for Americans seeking to celebrate Thanksgiving beyond national borders, with international airfare actually decreasing by 5%.
While cars and planes dominate, alternative travel methods are gaining traction, with approximately 1.92 million individuals preparing to travel by bus, cruise, or train. This particular category has seen a notable increase of 9 percent from the previous year, significantly powered by the burgeoning popularity of cruising—where bookings have reportedly skyrocketed by 20%. This diverse range of travel options allows families and friends to connect, regardless of their chosen means of transportation.
For those traveling domestically this Thanksgiving, Florida remains the most popular state, with cities like Orlando, Miami, and Fort Lauderdale leading the pack. Not far behind are New York and Los Angeles/Anaheim, while Honolulu, San Francisco, Las Vegas, and Atlanta hold spots within the top ten destinations. On an international scale, AAA identifies Budapest, Hungary, as the top pick, followed by destinations including Mexicali, San Juan, Cancun, and Punta Cana. This varied mix of locations shows that Americans are eager to experience both traditional and novel holiday settings.
Emphasizing Connection Through Travel
Stacey Barber, the Vice President of AAA Travel, notes the essence of Thanksgiving travel lies in reconnecting with family and friends. The surge in travelers highlights the critical role that travel plays in facilitating these connections. As travel continues to adapt to changing dynamics, it reaffirms the importance of gathering—no matter the distance traveled. With new records anticipated in driving, flying, and cruising, the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday clearly embodies the spirit of togetherness and adventure among Americans as they embark on this cherished seasonal journey.
