In the wake of Hurricane Milton, the mood at Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club Resorts remains surprisingly buoyant. The once-vibrant resort has been transformed into a scene of meticulous preparation, adorned with sandbags lining entryways and furniture secured against the threatening winds. While these visual reminders of the storm’s impact are evident, the formidable spirit of Disney shines through as guests navigate an atypical vacation experience. As a family who ventured to Orlando during this tumultuous period, our stay has offered not only an escape from reality but a masterclass in crisis management, courtesy of Disney.
Arriving at Disney World on a Monday, uncertainty was in the air regarding the potential implications of Hurricane Milton. Our travel advisor stayed in constant contact and ensured our transition into the resort was seamless despite the brewing storm. By midweek, as the storm approached, it became apparent that parks would close early on Wednesday, a situation that left many anticipating what our vacation would entail. However, our initial fears quickly melted away as we discovered a well-organized and accommodating atmosphere within the resort.
On Wednesday morning, we enjoyed the usually bustling Animal Kingdom, witnessing a remarkably tranquil experience, particularly while observing the gorillas. The restaurant Tiffins, typically filled with patrons, felt intimate and unhurried, creating an unexpected opportunity to savor quality moments before the park closed. This pleasant unease served as a precursor to the familial atmosphere that enveloped the Beach Club later that evening.
As the storm loomed closer, the Beach Club became an oasis of comfort amidst the chaos. That evening, our plans for the Epcot International Food and Wine Festival were dashed, yet they were transformed into an enjoyable experience as we dined at Cape May Cafe. From the moment we stepped into the restaurant, Disney’s staff brought joy to the evening, proving that great dining experiences could thrive even amidst a hurricane alert.
The camaraderie of the other guests and cast members contributed to the overall delightful atmosphere, as kids engaged in crafts and character interactions. My daughter was especially enamored with creating a crafty “campfire crown,” showcasing how Disney prioritizes guest engagement even in extraordinary circumstances.
What truly stood out during our stay at the Beach Club was the unwavering dedication of the cast members. These individuals, part of Disney’s hurricane team, worked around the clock to make every effort to maintain a sense of normalcy and positivity for the guests. They managed to foster an environment where laughter could still be heard, even as winds howled outside. Thanks to their preparedness, essential services – from food outlets to entertainment – remained operational, ensuring that guests remained both engaged and comfortable.
It’s worth mentioning that throughout our stay, power and internet connectivity were stable, providing us with a comforting sense of security. On Thursday morning, despite the storm’s steady presence, cast members encouraged us to remain indoors while maintaining operations in a manner reminiscent of a well-rehearsed performance.
From my limited perspective at the Beach Club, the aftermath of Hurricane Milton appears minimal. A few branches strewn about and puddles forming in the once lively volleyball court are the only evidence of the storm’s passage, a testament to Disney’s robust infrastructure and readiness to manage such situations.
While the broader impact of Hurricane Milton on the state of Florida is indeed troubling, my heart goes out to those affected. Nevertheless, our family has forged unforgettable memories during our time at Disney, filled with unexpected adventures, warmth, and joy amid adversity. And as we look forward to a beautiful day ahead, it’s clear that a sprinkle of magic mixed with resilience and community spirit can indeed transform a challenging experience into something quite special.
